Case Study 3

Case Study - Historic Vehicle Sound Recordings

The Aims

• To make high quality sound recordings of a selection of historic high performance cars
• To capture the engine sound character under operating loads
• To minimise background and other unwanted noises

How We Did It

To minimise background noise, the recordings were made inside a semi-anechoic chamber, rather than out on the track. This allowed for the full character of the car's engine, exhaust, and intake noise to be captured.
• The vehicles were fitted to high capacity hub dynamometers, allowing cars of up to 800Hp, and 700Nm of torque to be tested safely at high loads. The hub dynamometers eliminated the unwanted noise of the tyres, which would have be present on either test track, or rolling road recordings.
